Diurnal and Monthly Variability of Lightning Observation Over West Africa

چکیده
This study examines in detail lightning activities over West Africa using the worldwide location network (WWLLN). The Worldwide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN; operated by University of Washington) is a developing, experimental detection increasingly used for applications. In Africa, there are many studies on diurnal process activity at regional level, but shortage literature examining variation observation this region. Therefore main objective to examine presenting an evaluation WWLLN data as ground truth improve knowledge ground-based system. For study, variability flash counts (frequency) was measured three climatic sub-region (Guinea, Savannah and Sahel) sub-regions line graph plot time. All regions exhibit strong variation, with peaking late afternoon between 1500 1700 WAT decreased morning 0900 1100 WAT. amplitude varies throughout Africa.

Seasonal and diurnal variation of lightning activity over southern Africa and correlation with European whistler observations
Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) data have been analysed to ascertain the statistical pattern of lightning occurrence over southern Africa. The diurnal and seasonal variations are mapped in detail. The highest flash rates (107.2 km−2y−1) occur close to the equator but maxima are also found over Madagascar (32.1 km−2y−1) and South Africa (26.4 km−2y−1). A feature of the statistics is a relatively ...
متن کاملAfrican aerosol and large-scale precipitation variability over West Africa
We investigated the large-scale connection between African aerosol and precipitation in the West African Monsoon (WAM) region using 8-year (2000–2007) monthly and daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol products (aerosol optical depth, fine mode fraction) and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation and rain type. These high-quality data further confi...
متن کاملTropospheric NO2 concentrations over West Africa are influenced by climate zone and soil moisture variability
The annual cycles of soil moisture and NO2 have been analysed across the climate zones of West Africa using two satellite data sets (OMI on AURA and ASCAT on MetOp-A). Exploring the sources and sinks for NO2 it is clear that the densely populated urban cities including Lagos and Abuja had the highest mean NO2 concentrations (>1.8 × 10 15 molecules cm -2 ) indicative of the anthropogenic urban e...
متن کاملInvestigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa
This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...
متن کاملTotal ozone as a stratospheric indicator of climate variability over West Africa
In this paper, a study of the statistical analysis of total ozone concentration as released by satellite EPTOMS was used to show that annual coefficient of relative variability (ACRV) of ozone in West Africa over a period of 48 months increased gradually from 3.5% at latitudinal zone 0-5N to 6.1% at zone 2025N. A strong positive correlation of 0.99 was observed between the ACRV of ozone and ave...
